Fred Brandt, N3JAX, passed away on January 13 of 2020, at the age of 81 years. From a young age, radio was one of his passions. He spent many hours during his youth listening to radio broadcasts and stretching antennas through adjacent trees. In high school he was befriended by someone who helped him learn about repairing audio equipment and he also gained the responsibility of running the sound system at his school. He spent his life working at Gallaudet University, involved with speech and sound research. When his son Michael was in 8th grade, he started taking him to Ham Radio classes taught by Henry Miller at Washington Adventist University (then CUC). Over time Fred was able to earn his extra class license and enjoyed working a variety of bands. He spent most of his time on 2 meters, and developed a close group of friends on the Bluemont, Virginia repeater, frequently serving as net control during the morning commute. After moving to Tennessee, with his Parkinson's continuing to advance, he still enjoyed attending Hamfests, Field Days, and spent many hours experimenting with antennas. Over the years, he would often sign off after a QSO with the words "Keep looking up, cause He's coming soon". Fred now sleeps in Jesus, looking forward to the day when he can meet his many radio friends in person and to add his voice to the music of heaven.
Michael Brandt, KA3VPX
